Mark Ingalls and Danny Brock take Piedmont Upstate Two Man Team Championship!

A nice, pleasant Sunday afternoon at Greer Country Club turned into quite a shootout in the end of the Piedmont Upstate Two Man Team Championship. Danny Brock chipped in for a birdie three from 10 yards off the back of the green on #18 that turned out to be the deciding shot in a back-nine 29 that gave him and partner Mark Ingalls a one shot victory. The chip-in put a cap on a torrid back nine by the pair, especially Brock, who himself made six birdies in the Texas Scramble format. Texas Scramble lets both players hit from the tee and select the best shot. From there, both players play their own ball into the hole and record the best score. Brock made birdies on #10, 11, 12, 13, 15, and the #18 chip-in, while Ingalls also made birdie at 15 and a big one on #16. Brock and Ingalls shot 32 on the front nine in a modified alternate shot format. That gave them a 61 on the day and a tournament total of 125, 19 under par.

First round co-leading teams of Rick Robarge/Chris Wilkins and Tyler Burdine/Adam Edens both got off to slow starts in the alternate shot format on the front 9. They shot even and one-under respectively, putting their hold on the top of the leaderboard in jeopardy. But being the competitors they are, both caught fire on the back nine as well, firing 29 and 30. With Burdine/Edens one shot ahead, and not knowing what Brock and Ingalls had done ahead of them, Wilkins holed a shot from the 18th fairway for an eagle 2 to move them to -18.  Edens then rolled in a 12 foot birdie to tie them, and the four looked as though they were expecting to go to a sudden death playoff. But when told they had finished one shot behind they were quick to congratulate the champions.

Thank you to all who played in another fine event. Special thanks to Steven Gay and Bruce Redmon, along with the staff at Greer Country Club for hosting us this weekend. Applications for the Greenville County Amateur will be available online June 1.

Max Fain and Mike Gravley win 2009 Two Man Championship...

Great field of 52 teams challenged at Greer Country Club....
It wasn't the Greater Greer Open this time, but Mike Gravley bagged another title at Greer Country Club. Gravley teamed up with partner Max Fain to capture the Greenville County Golf Association's Piedmont Classic Two Man Team Championship. Fain and Gravley, who is an 11 time winner at Greer, including ten GGO championships and a Greenville County Amateur, came to the par 5 15th hole one shot behind Rick & Derrick Oyervides. The father-son duo had finished their round 45 minutes earlier out of the 1st Flight with a final round 64 to follow up an opening 66. Gravley, however gave the winners the lead with a 20 foot eagle putt, then followed that with a 15 footer on 16. After Fain holed a short par putt on the 190 yard par 3 17th, he rolled in a 10 foot birdie on the last hole to give the team a comfortable 3 shot victory with a two day total of 65-62-127. The Oyervides team tied for 2nd with first round leaders Garland Ferrell & Austin Reeves at 130. Greer members Terry Hendricks and Doug Ramey finished fourth at 131.

The Oyervides team won the First Flight, while Tommy Ashworth- Whit Suber, Dean & Kevin Gosnell, and Doug Brown- Shane Grumbles won the Second, Third, and Fourth Flights. Thanks to all of the 52 teams that entered this year's tournament. It was a great success as the weather and the course were very good, and Greer's new clubhouse drew rave reviews. Thanks also to General Manager Kenny Brooks, Head Professional Zach Easler, and Greens Superentendant Rick Lister and staff for a job well done. The Greenville County Golf Association looks forward to returning to Greer in the near future!

Rick Fricke, Andy Price win playoff to win 2001 Piedmont Classic!

Fricke & Price (right) won on the second playoff hole over Todd Satterfield & Jack Brown

Rick Fricke and Andy Price were coast to coast winners of the Piedmont Classic Team Championship this weekend at Pebble Creek, but nobody said it was easy. Fricke & Price fired rounds of 64 & 68 for a 132 total. They were one ahead going into Sunday's round, ahead of Todd Satterfield & Jack Brown. Fricke & Satterfield were bidding to become the first two time winner of the tournament. They both had previously won with a different partner. Satterfield & Brown shot a 67 Sunday, to go with Saturday's 65,for an equal 132 total. The format was Saturday, front nine best ball, and back nine captain's choice on Creekside. Sunday was played on Linkside, with front nine captain's choice, and back nine best ball.
The playoff began on #1, with both teams making par. On #2, a reachable par 5 with two great shots, saw all players within 50 yards in two. Satterfield had blasted from the greenside bunker just past the hole, but the steep slope somehow grabbed his ball 20 feet past. Price, who hit his second shot far left, was given a reprise when his ball was in a drop area, pitched some 40 feet past and faced a downhill breaking putt. He rolled it down the hill, dead center for a birdie four. Satterfield, the Furman golf coach, slid his tying try inches below the hole to give Fricke & Price the championship.
In the overall totals, John Black & Thomas Barker and Tim Garrett & Tommy Ashworth were third with 134, as they passed several players with 65 & 66's on Sunday from the second & first flights.Joey Patterson & Pat Morris were fifth at 135, while 2002 champs Doug Brown & Jim Wilson had another nice tournament, tying for sixth. Complete results follow. Thanks to everyone who came out and played to make this tournament special!
